Osaka University, the operator of Protein Data Bank Japan (PDBj), reported that on May 11, 2023, the worldwide Protein Data Bank (wwPDB) celebrated its 20th anniversary and that the number of data registrations from PDBj reached 50,000, equivalent to one quarter of the world PDB data.

PDBj operates the Protein Data Bank (PDB) under the international project wwPDB in collaboration with centers in the U.S. and Europe. PDB is the only database in the world that archives three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules determined through experiments. wwPDB is a project launched in 2003 by PDBj in collaboration with European and U.S. centers. Osaka University started the registration of protein structure data in 2000, three years earlier than the establishment of wwPDB. Since then, PDBj has been registering protein structure information analyzed mainly in the Asian region as a representative institution in Asia.

Information of three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules archived in PDB is a important information for drug discovery and other applications. PDBj contributes greatly not only to academic fields but also to industrial applications by providing highly reliable data under an international framework.

For details, please see the press release of Osaka University, "Reached 50,000 records, equivalent to a quarter of the world's PDB data! Osaka University has been operating the world's Protein Data Bank (PDB) for 20 years".

PDBj is developed and operated as part of the research and development project "Advanced development of Protein Data Bank extended as the Data-driven research platform." under the "Database Integration Coordination Program".
